Bethlehem Came To Shanklin
Crib Festival December 2018
The annual Crib Festival at St Blasius Church, held at the beginning of December,
was a great success again.
Over 60 different nativity scenes, of all shapes and sizes, were on display, including one prepared by
the Children of St Blasius Church of England Primary Academy.
The large-scale model of Bethlehem helped visitors to travel
in heart and mind into the Christmas story.
There are many words to use for a patient person.
Uncomplaining, tolerant, resigned, stoical, calm,
composed, imperturbable, understanding, I could go on.
All of these are attributes shown by Brenda Philpott as
she patiently waited for the installation of handrails at the
entrance to our church to give assistance to worshippers
entering our building. Brenda first raised this issue
approximately five years ago and for one reason and
another there have been many delays in the process
leading to their installation.
Finally the day arrived and after our Matins service on
November 18th Brenda was asked to cut the ribbon on
the new handrails following a blessing from Reverend
Jonathan and in front of our congregation (see photo).
PATIENCE IS A GODLY VIRTUE
After waiting so long for them to be installed one of the comments I have heard most often is that
the design of the handrails makes it look as if they have always been there. For this we have two
people to thank. Firstly John Bratherton for his excellent design which is in complete symbiosis with
the overall architecture of our church. Secondly, Graham Potter, our local metal worker who
manufactured and installed the handrails. Well done to you both.
It is true, everything comes to he or she who waits (eventually!!!!).
Mothers' Union Summer Festival
On Wednesday 5 June, Pam, Angela and I travelled to Newport for the Mothers' Union Summer
Festival, which took place in the Minster. About forty ladies attended from all over the island.
Revd Kevin Arkell presided over the Eucharist and Revd Trevor Reader preached, and a small, but
enthusiastic choir led the singing (Pam and I made up two of the four singers). We were pleased
to see three new ladies admitted to the Mothers' Union. As usual, proceedings ended with a
bring and share tea, and a good time was had by all.
