It was indeed a pleasure to welcome back the Chamber Choir from the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, Canterbury
with their musical director Emily Renshaw-Kidd.
They delighted us with a very varied programme of music of all genres, played on a variety of instruments.
“A Little Jazz Mass” by Chilcott was competently performed and the boys obviously enjoyed singing this. Also by Chilcott, a
contemplative setting of the text of “In the bleak midwinter” was very moving, as was a beautiful classical guitar solo performed
by Edan Roberts.
“The Lamb” by Taverner represents a tuning challenge for any choir, let alone one as young as this, but they made a very good
attempt at this difficult piece, which had one or two moments of interesting different interpretation of the music by the
conductor. This has caused some discussion in our household!

The sizeable audience also enjoyed hearing a jazzy
saxophone solo, clarinet accompaniment in places and the
newly formed brass ensemble led by their very young but
very determined leader and arranger, who had written an
ambitious arrangement of “We three Kings”. Two Rutter
pieces and “O Holy Night” provided more Christmas music,
and were a contrast to “Dancing in the moonlight” where
there was a danger the audience might get up and join in!
The Centenary of the signing of the Armistice was
acknowledged with a very sweetly sung arrangement of
“Keep the home fires burning” by Ivor Novello.
Last but not least by any means we enjoyed a very confident
Bach organ solo by Fred (born in a leap year, so only 3 in real
terms!) Fortunately the organ pedal cipher which has been so
troublesome recently was repaired quite by chance on
Saturday afternoon, just in time! Phew!
Finally a special mention should be made of the young
accompanist, who played very sensitively and was a great
asset.
All in all this was a very enjoyable evening, and we thank
everyone who performed or contributed in any way. We do
hope they will come again next year!
