Appley Beach Clean 2015

May 2015

On Saturday 30th May, a group of volunteers from St Blasius Mothers’ Union in conjunction with Green Towns Shanklin (which provided the equipment) did a magnificent job in clearing the litter at Appley Beach from Shanklin Chine towards Luccombe Chine. In about two hours they not only filled 15 black bags with 1,113 items but also logged all these on the Marine Conservation Society’s survey sheets.   By far the largest number of things found on the beach were derived from plastic which is of increasing concern as it can enter the food chain. The data gathered will help to provide information for future government policy affecting the state of the environment. Well done to all!
